The Bicycle Man
Vijay came to a Global Disciples small business training near his home in South Asia. As he thought about what God had put in his hands to use for business, he thought about his bicycle. He knew he had the skills and experience to repair bicycles. And bicycles are a popular, affordable form of transportation in his region.
Vijay created his business plan and after training, he approached the local marketplace for permission to set up shop. The market committee turned him down. So he set up under a tree and began fixing bicycles. Soon he had customers coming and, through his witness, five people came to faith in Jesus.
As word got around that Vijay was sharing Christ, some villagers attacked him, beating him so badly he was hospitalized for several days. He had time in the hospital to pray and fast, seeking God’s guidance on how to continue.
God made it clear to him that he should continue, so Vijay pursued opening his shop in the marketplace again. This time the market committee gave him a space—but it was on the second floor, above the street and away from traffic and people with bicycles. Undeterred, Vijay accepted it and began fixing bikes again. Customers found him, the business grew, and the committee eventually gave him approval for a better space at street level.
Despite frequent opposition and setback, Vijay continues to faithfully work and witness to the Gospel of Jesus. So far, he has planted two small fellowships with about 45 new believers in his community. And he has shared his story with others, encouraging them to trust God’s faithfulness to multiply what’s in their hands for the Kingdom.
