A Breath of Fresh Heir
It’s the stuff of dramatic tension in books and movies: who is named in a will, who isn’t, and what assets are at stake. While most estate plans aren’t quite that exciting, there are cases of outside-the-box bequests:
- A wealthy Portuguese bachelor randomly selected 70 names from the Lisbon telephone directory and bequeathed his fortune to those individuals.
- Billionaire Leona Helmsley left $12 million to her dog (and excluded two of her grandsons, who were none too pleased).
- Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, included a special gift in his will: his birthday. A friend didn’t like her December 25 birthdate, so he gave her his, November 13.
These stories illustrate a larger point: Your estate plan is less about who gets what and more about what’s important to you. It’s one of the best ways to communicate with your loved ones about your faith in God and the values you hold dear.
It’s Psalm 78:4 in action: “We will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.”
Here are two suggestions to get started:
- Write a Legacy Love Letter. Consider this a cover letter for your estate plan that outlines guiding principles, stories of personal faith, and future wishes for your family. Contact us for a free guide.
- Include a Gift in Your Will to Global Disciples. An in-will gift makes your priorities clear and helps us continue to impact lives.
Your will is the ultimate opportunity to share what’s most important.
